From Surviving to Thriving: Reclaiming Hope

January 21, 2017 @ 10:30 am - 2:00 pm

Real life, real parents, and real struggles. Raising an adopted child with a history of trauma and maltreatment can shatter the dreams you had for your family. Unmet expectations, unforeseen challenges, and a lack of support can lead you to feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, disappointed, and exhausted.

If your adoption didn’t turn out the way you thought it would, this interactive presentation will validate your experience. Gain insight and practical coping strategies to restore hope to your parenting.

MELISSA PETERSON is an experienced speaker, trainer, curriculum writer, training designer, and coach for parents. She has a long history of employment in nonprofits working with children, youth, and families. In 2007, she adopted an eleven-year-old girl with a history of maltreatment, multiple traumas, and severe behaviors from The Program for Minnesota’s Waiting Children. She knows that parenting a child with a traumatic history and severe behaviors is difficult.

Having experienced the complexities of navigating mental health, social services, and educational systems, she understands the challenges of finding support, advocating for your needs, and securing services. Melissa knows what it is like to wake up and dread the day ahead, question your parenting, and go to bed exhausted and hopeless. While she still has parenting challenges, Melissa has learned that when you invest in yourself and focus on your strengths, there is hope for a positive, loving relationship with your child.
